Making a Move to a New City: Gen Y Chasing Jobs and Experiences

It might sound glamorous to move to the big city lights, or conversely romantic to exit urban trials for a small-town life, but there are challenges for PR pros whose networks are lifeblood. Moving means your local personal bucket of journalists, sponsors, donors, and colleagues once again must be filled. But sometimes, life in a new city comes after you – a new opportunity, spouse’s transfer, family responsibilities or a need for a fresh start – and you wind up in a new place, looking for a new job in PR.

For me, my husband’s promotion meant leaving sunny Phoenix for the upbeat Midwestern city of Columbus, Ohio (Following college in Nebraska, moving to Denver, then to Phoenix – all in the first few years of my career). After some months of serious searching, I happily settled into a new job and iteration of my PR career, translating my media skills into the digital world at Oxiem.

Here’s how I did it, and how you can, too.

1.    Get the lay of the land

Chamber packages, local Convention and Visitor’s Bureaus and American Business Journal newspapers’ Books of Lists can be fantastic resources to help you understand the local ecosystem. Who are the biggest employers? What are the leading industries? Finding out will help you ground yourself in the landscape and understand where you might fit.

2.    Lurk online first

One of the best parts about social networking is that you don’t have to be in the same physical location to interact with people. Lurking around the Twitterverse, scouring LinkedIn and friending forgotten college friends on Facebook can help you start virtually growing your networks. The first people I asked to meet up face to face when I moved were people I knew through Twitter.

3.    Start networking early, even before the move

Find out as much as you can as soon as you can, so that when you land in your new spot you can hit the ground running. This could be as early as an exploratory weekend trip or home-finding expedition. Squeeze in a few coffees and lunches with people you’ve interacted with online. They’ll be impressed at your early proactivity.

4.    Join groups and participate in associations and seminars

While most of us attend industry events as our work schedules allow, when you’re new, try to hit as many as humanly possible. Sitting at a table with a stranger automatically connects you, and eliminates the need to reach out online or through a contact. Costs can be prohibitive if you’re not currently working, but don’t be afraid to ask if there is a discounted rate for unemployed pros or if you can pay the student price. Today, it’s not uncommon.

5.    Be the most outgoing version of yourself

For a few months at least, be the most gregarious you possibly can be. You don’t have to be the life of the party, but you do have to be memorable. Play up whatever makes you most interesting – research background, foreign travel, hobbies or talents. People will be interested in you if you demonstrate passion and ability to connect with others.

My rule is that I can’t say no to any invitation, be it professional or social, for the first year in a new city. Even if you don’t connect personally with the person who invited you, they might have awesome friends or coworkers.

6.    Give back even before you have been given anything

When you’re new, you have to earn people’s trust and time drop by drop. They’ll be more interested in you if you can show you’ve already gotten involved in your new city and are trying to use your skills for the greater good. Volunteering, planning charity events, doing pro bono PR work, or joining a committee can help.

7.    Play the newbie card liberally

The great thing about being new is it’s a free pass to reach out to connections. You don’t need a reason other than trying to learn about local media, agencies or companies. I can’t tell you how many times I discussed what suburbs were best, local Columbus attractions, and the Ohio State Buckeyes vs. my alma mater’s team, the Nebraska Cornhuskers. Your fresh eyes and new perspective are always of interest to locals, so they’ll want to hear about your take on their town as well.

New professionals have an advantage in today’s economy because of our mobility. We can pick up and move for a job when others can’t, and most of us are excited to gain life and career experiences in a new place. All it takes is to make that first big, scary step off the ledge. When you land, follow this guide and you might find the fall wasn’t so far after all.

Drill and Blast Engineer

A vacancy currently exists for an energetic and enthusiastic mining engineer to join the Drill and Blast Team at Mt Arthur Coal. This position will report to the Drill and Blast Superintendent and assist in improving safety, increasing productivity and inventories and improving the cost effectiveness of the Drill and Blast process on site. The Drill and Blast Team is transitioning from 70Mbcm of shot rock to 100Mbcm of shot rock. Additional expansion plans are being developed that will see this volume increase further.

The Drill and Blast Engineer will have the following direct responsibilities:

* Prepare drill & blast designs
* Review drill & blast activities with key production personnel to continuously improve designs and operating practices
* Conduct regular field visits of drill and blast operations to ensure high quality standards are being maintained, plans are being implemented and recommend opportunities to improve
* Collate statistics for all drill and blast operations
* Liaise with drill and blast personnel
* Ensure positive relationships with all stakeholders are developed and maintained through effective communication and consultation
* Develop and implement blasting improvement programs including strategies to reduce drill and blast costs to the business
* Ensure compliance with all HSEC Policies and Procedures, Safe Work Instructions, Standard Operating Procedures, Statutory Legislation including the Coal Mines Health and Safety Act, Explosives Act and Occupational Health and Safety Act, and any Mine Site Rules
* Provide weekly and monthly mining reports as required

Selection Criteria

* Tertiary qualifications in Mining or Civil Engineering
* 2 years+ experience at an open cut operation
* Experience using drill and blast software (Datavis and Minescape used on site)
* NSW Open Cut Examiners Certificate of Competency would be highly regarded
* Blasting knowledge would be highly regarded. For example:
o UHL or shot firers ticket
o Knowledge of explosive products and / or open cut blasting applications
* Ability to develop good working relationships and communication with co-workers, drillers and shot firers
* Current driver’s licence
* Excellent written and verbal communication skills
* Exposure to continuous improvement projects

Get Out Of A Job You Hate

Here’s a great post I ran across recently.  Research indicates that 55% of Americans are dissatisfied with their jobs.  This isn’t really surprising given all the bad-boss jokes and TV shows and movies dealing with bad or unsatisfying jobs.

The author offers up two options for what to do about a job you hate.  First, you can find another job.  Often, this is easier said than done, but life is just too short to spend eight hours a day and 40 (or more) hours a week doing something that you hate.

The other option is to do something with your other hours of your day that brings you satisfaction.  If you don’t completely hate your day job, you can think of it as something that enables you to the things you really want to.  While I enjoy my job, I’d rather be playing: I work so I can play.

It’s tragic to spend so much time doing something we hate so much.  And usually, the dissatisfaction of a job comes home with us and affects our personal lives, too.  Sometimes how you feel about a job is just a matter of a change in attitude, but sometimes it requires more disruptive action.

Work-Study.. No home life.

I don’t understand how people balance their lives. We’re expected to work, for money for the future. We’re expected to study so that we can work in better jobs in the future, so that we can lives without having to beg for money on the streets. Some people can do this easily – they’re care-free.
Others, like me, can not deal with stress what-so-ever.

I can hardly juggle work and studying part-time, especially with all my doctor/psychologist/psychiatrist/orthodontist appointments. It just makes me feel like I’m being pushed off the edge.

How do people work, study and balance home life whilst being happy?
If anyone knows, please let me know, I can’t live like this much longer.

Lady Gaga Was my OBGYN

In this whacked out dream I had the other night, I was pregnant with triplets.  I was pretty pissed off about it, because who wants three babies at once?  I was gigantic.  Waddling around hating life looking like a complete freak of nature.

In my dream, I went for my weekly checkup at my OBGYN, and I am shown to a back room to wait for the doctor to come in and check me.  I’m sitting on the table, naked from the waist down, sheet over my lower half.  All of a sudden, Lady Gaga walks in, she didn’t even knock.  She walks in wearing her sequined sparkly lobster boots, hair out to Mars, with her whole sequin-lobster-people entourage.  I’m lying on the table and I tell her, “Lady Gaga, I don’t think I feel comfortable with you anywhere near my vagina in that get-up.”

She takes off her sunglasses and says, “Of course, I will be right back,” in her ever-elusive Lady Gaga speak, and she leaves followed by her clan of sequin lobster people.   She leaves me there on the table, and I’m lying there looking out the window, and I see her and her lobster people getting onto a bus and leaving.  I’m really pissed because my ass is cold sitting on this table, so I get up and go out into the hallway to talk to one of the nurses, because god dammit, I want my check up so I can go the fuck home.

“Oh, she will be back after her show tonight.”  The nurse says like nothing is wrong with this.  Yes the fuck there is A LOT wrong with ALL of this.  So I put my clothes back on and I leave that ridiculousness.

I googled my dream interpretation, and supposedly being pregnant in dreams means a transformation is coming, and I am about to give birth to a new me.  Perhaps I will be transforming into a lesbian.  That explains so much.  Gayness.  I’m gay.  Hmmmmmm…  I don’t know.  I think I watch too many music videos in the morning and I need a day job.

Speaking of Lady Gaga, this video came on a minute ago by Lady Antebellum.  I thought, oh, she must be a friend of Lady Gaga.  Because they are both ladies.  Duh.  Obviously.  WRONG.  There was not any poisoning people, or dancing in underwear enough for those bastards to be any kind of friends with Lady Gaga.

And what the fuck is an antebellum?  I looked it up.  Yeah.  I went to dictionary.com and educated myself.  Antebellum means before or existing before the American civil war.   Ohhhhh.. So the Lady Antebellum people are a bunch of redneck lynch-mobbing freaks.  I get it.  WTF??????????????????  I could think of a million names for a band that would be infinitely better than Lady Antebellum.  Well, I know who’s not going to be performing on BET ever.  That’s right.

I’m looking for jobs still.  I’ve been on Career Builder everyday now since the unemployment people might just this last extension.  I applied for everything.  I applied for an Executive VP position.  That pays $80k per year, and I’m way under-qualified for it.  But I applied anyway, just to clog up that person who posted that ad’s box.  I might as well make them work a little harder.  $80k.  Jesus.  What do people do with all that money?  I suppose I could find something to spend that money on.

So I’ll be sitting here, waiting for somebody, anybody to call me for a job today.   I know it won’t be the Executive VP, but shit.  I will take anything at this point.

The Role

Best Companies For Job Growth

Yesterday Yahoo Finance published an article on the Best Companies for Job Growth.  Many of the companies had over 20% job growth last year when “companies weren’t hiring”.

They’re Hiring!
As the leader of  The Compass Group, my church’s career group, I often hear “no one is hiring”.  Even in Austin, Texas – reportedly one of the strongest economies in the U.S., I constantly hear this statement.  I always reply with “someone is hiring”, and by the stats in Yahoo Finance’s article, some companies were doubling their workforce!

As a Career Coach, I recommend a strategy that targets companies that the client would like to (and be proud to) work for.  I’m generally asked how to get started making a list of companies.  This Yahoo Finance article will be one of the tools that anyone can use to start building a list of target companies.

It wasn't too taxing

Went to see the accountant today. Since I have no income to speak of that may seem like a ridiculous thing to do. But the tiny sum money I do earn needs to be protected. AND each year I seem to have something strange happen that I don’t know how to handle. I started seeing these accounting people about 16 years ago when I still had a job.My Father died and taxes became more complicated. Anyway, I took all my info and found that once again I don’t owe any money since I don’t make any money.

The nice thing about speaking with an accountant each year is that I can ask questions that help me plan things better. This year I learned quite a bit. And also I now know, for sure, no doubt, no question, that I NEED a job.

Or I need to win the lottery.

Or both.

So here's the thing.

I’m playing around the fringes of something here.  A new perspective perhaps.  I just found out a few days ago that my job will end in a couple of months.  A more piecemeal form of it will remain available to me, which is – okayish, I suppose.  I’ll be eligible for unemployment.  And I have a marketable skill that I can also use in freelancing.

I wonder, though, about something.  See, here’s the thing.  It turns out that in the work I was doing, I was never fulfilling the role I thought I was fulfilling.  When I was informed of the job ending, it was with a “thank you for helping us for so long” message.  I’ve been there, off and on, for over a decade (the “off”portion was for the baby/toddler years).  I thought I was a colleague, not someone brought in to help the real colleagues.  So I toy with the question of whether I should respond with the anger I feel over that, if I might burn some bridges if I do that.  And then I toy with the question of whether the bridge was ever really built in the first place.  And maybe all that’s there to burn is my phantom idea of a nonexistent bridge that I’ve been so diligently building and maintaining…

So – what does this say about the rest of my life?  Is it possible that as I strive for self-awareness, and reach for a safe and simple way to continue coming out, that I’m just helping?  Or worse yet, am I just doing other people’s jobs for them?  Is it possible that I’m trying to keep bridges from burning in places where there is no bridge?

I’m so “good,”  so “cooperative.”  I want everything to be “fair.”  And right now, most of what matters intensely to me is quiet, unannounced in my external life.  To some degree that’s really fine.  I feel like some aspects of my life are incubating.  So be it.  But on some level I wonder if I’m just helping, rather than living.

And I don’t have a road map for how to make the change.  I’m not twenty.  I’m not leaving home to go off to college or something like that.  I wonder, how do I find my way out of the places I feel trapped, but familiar?  And even more, how do I discover those places where I thought I was being fair, but I’m really just “helping”?  How do I determine what parts of my life consist of investing in relationships and lifestyle patterns that will never ever give back?

I suspect the answer is that if I have to ask myself if THIS or THAT is one of those places, it is.  No wonder I’m exhausted.  I think it’s time to sit back and feel the difference between real life and forced life.  Just sit back, just observe from inside my life – what’s working, what’s not?  And it occurs to me that a lot of what I need to “do” is – nothing.  I need to do a lot more nothing in most of the places where I am investing.

It’s the places that comfort me and scare me that are probably real.

Post Spring Break Blogging

Hey internet. How are you? I’m good now that SNOWPOCALYPSE 2010 has passed.

Thank goodness for 4-Wheel Drive!

School is going ok. It’s been awhile since I took a gen-ed so I forgot that you should actually study for them. I think I’ll be ok. My Senior Psychology class (Physiological Psychology) is killer. It’s kind of interesting in an “I needed to fulfill a requirement and this is the only class that fit my schedule” kind of way. My research team’s experiment is looking at the effects of music on spatial reasoning tasks (read: How well can you do a maze while listening to music?). One of my group mates is a slacker, and I was concerned that we would have a repeat of last semester, but my third group mate is really awesome, so I’m not that worried.

Color Guard is going ok. The expected hostility is there and I’m in the back a lot…BUT….I have a sweet solo! It’s on sabre and it’s a pretty decent length. I will post a video when I get one.  Sorority life is…odd. It was great but then we had a medical emergency and now it’s kind of falling apart and sad. Target is going great. Im working on getting trained at Guest Services (where you can play with TAPE!) and am a pretty good cashier. Yesterday a guess asked me if I could figure out his change if he gave me an additional $0.14, which ticked me off (fyi $0.86 + $0.14 = $1). Just because I work at Target doesn’t mean that I’m stupid, ok?

My roommate is really starting to tick me off (nothing new there). He’s just so dang LOUD! He’s loud when he leaves in the morning, he’s loud when he comes home, he turns his TV/Computer/Music on loud, he SNORES loudly. He contributes nothing to the household and even refuses to unload any dishes from the dishwasher that he doesn’t own (read: silverware). It’s very frustrating. But, I’m moving out June 1 (even if I don’t find someone to take over my lease). I’ve finally found a job that will pay me ok!

Reality Check

Today’s Scripture: Job 32-34

Today’s passage gives us a refreshing change from the slalom of arguments between Job, Eliphaz, Bildad, and Zophar.  Another charatcer enters the scene (although I have to wonder if he has been there the whole time but simply was not mentioned before), and he brings the earlier speeches to a halt.  I’m liking this guy already.

First, we see a clear image of their culture through the first several verses of Elihu’s speech.  After his introduction, Elihu spends 17 verses defending himself to Job’s friends, telling them that he, too, is qualified to speak.  He makes it clear that he was intentional in respecting the authority of elders by listening to them speak, but now that they have nothing more to say, he would like to add something.  He also says, “But it is the spirit in a man, the breath of the Almighty, that gives him understanding.  It is not only the old who are wise, not only the aged who understand what is right” (32:8-9).  It is unclear just how revolutionary an idea this might have been at the time, but I can say from experience that it’s not entirely removed from our own culture today.  Perhaps it has been just as much my own insecurity as it has been feedback from the world around me, but for one with the ambition to speak the Word of God to teach others, it is difficult to gain respect from elders.  One feels the impulse to go further than necessary educationally to make up for youth, but here Elihu simply makes his case and leaves it at that.  He says that he will speak, even if others tell him he is unqualified to do so.  May we all be so bold!

Elihu goes on to say both that God redeems us many times over from our deserved doom (death) and that even if we do not hear Him speaking, who are we to challenge Him?  Here again we see a Christlike image in 33:24b-26: “…I have found a ransom for him — then his flesh is renewed like a child’s; it is restored as in the days of his youth.  He prays to God and finds favor with Him, he see God’s face and shouts for joy; he is restored by God to his righteous state.”  Christ is the promised Messiah who would be the ransom for many — but again, have they received this prophesy yet, or are they speaking merely of God’s grace extended to those who humble themselves before Him and offer up sacrifices of atonement?

Elihu’s final words in this passage are strong: “Oh, that Job might be tested to the utmost for answering like a wicked man!  To his sin he adds rebellion; scornfully he claps his hands among us and multiplies his words against God” (34:36-37).  Elihu made it clear earlier on that he does not speak with the intention of slandering Job’s name, as it seems the others have (32:21, 33:6-7), but he also speaks truth where he sees it.  It seems, at least concerning Job, that Elihu’s point here remains that in his stubborn will to clear his name, Job has been prideful and has sinned against God.  Again, I mentioned this before in an earlier post so I won’t dig too far, but Elihu’s complaint with Job is spelled out from the beginning in 32:2: “[Elihu] became very angry with Job for justifying himself rather than God.”

It is refreshing here to see a meaningful answer to Job.  His three friends gave him nothing but worthless condemnations that did not confront or even begin to address the arguments that Job made.  Here, Elihu specifically counters with the idea that Job is arguing the wrong point.  The bigger issue is that God is God, and who are we to aruge against that?

I think we all try to make ourselves out to be God sometimes.  We don’t always do it on purpose, but even our tendency to fit everything into logical boxes is playing God in the sense that we lose the mystery of God’s ways.  If we shrink Him to fit into our boxes, then it leaves no room for Him to be who He is — all-powerful, all-knowing.  It is difficult to take a step back and just let Him work, but it’s a necessary step.

Day 68: ShiFTing with change

GRACE did…

What to do, what to do?!?  I could say I ShiFTed the World by volunteering my time for the Network 24/7 job transitions group when I gave a presentation on Time Management this morning.  But I wanted to do something else.

There are a few surprises waiting for a child at the local grocery store!  I chose my three favorite turn-crank machines to plug money into.  Which ones did I choose?

  1. Pet Tattoos
  2. Erasers (ice cream cones, smiley faces etc.)
  3. HUGE gum ball

If only I could see the smiling face of that child!

Wow. Today’s ShiFT was so easy you might not call it a legitimate ShiFT. Then again, I think it was meant to show me a lesson.

I was making a return at my favorite store. (Yep, Target.) After I had been helped I was standing at the counter folding up my re-usable tote bag and putting my wallet away. The customer service associate was so efficient that she already had the next person in line rung up before I had left. I heard the Target employee say to the customer; “Your return is $8.99. If you have a penny I can give you $9.”  Unfortunately the guest did not have her wallet with her. I was so happy to exclaim: “Well I have a penny!” I think I may have looked a little spastic. It was an opportunity I could seize to ShiFT the World and it had fallen straight into my lap without any plan at all. I was ecstatic. I let the customer know about the happiness movement. I think she might think I am a little crazy. I was after all pretty enthused about giving her a penny.

In any case I think that the lesson I was supposed to notice today was this: ShiFTing can be so effortless if your heart and mind are open to see the opportunities right in front of me! I dig that lesson, and I am ready for more ShiFTing tomorrow.

PS. I really think it would have been nasty to have to carry around 99 cents in change :0)

EngenderHealth Maternal Health programs include activities: essential obstetric care, management of abortion complications, management of pre-eclampsia and eclampsia, fistula care, and prevention of unplanned and unwanted pregnancies.

Born To Do

This week on The Job Search Boot Camp Show we had special guest Laurel Donnellan, the President of ThreeGiantLeaps and Author of the new book “Born To Do:  The Practical Guide To Loving Your Work”.  You can hear the replay here,  or listen to it on iTunes here. 

On our show, Laurel discussed how she brought together her training in ancient wisdom and positive psychology to help those in career search.  She says that she appreciates the need to earn a living by working, but says you need to do “the soul search before the job search” and by connecting to your “meaning” your life becomes much more interesting.

Searching Yourself
Our society defines people by their work.  The 2nd question most people ask – right after “what is your name?” – is “what do you do?“  The ‘test’ to see if you are in the right line of work is to think about the answer to that question.  The answer to “what do you do?” should elicit passion or excitement (or both!).   Most careeer books and Career Coaches usually don’t jump into the mechanics of the resume or job search.  Generally, they start with the inner work (or what Laurel calls “soul search”) to identify your values, dreams, and passions.  Through a short assessment and some short exercises, you can do the “soul searching” or the “inner work” to identify those traits that when you use them you lose track of time, or the tasks that put a smile on your face, or dream you had when you were a child of the career you would have. 

Courage
Many miserable employees remain miserable because they get paralyzed by fear.  Courage comes easy for some, and harder for others.  On our show, Laurel mentions those things that may be holding us back – what she calls “Limiting Beliefs”.  She says the way to gain courage and overcome the fear of changing careers is to identify patterns that hold us back. 

For example, no matter what our age – whether they are 24 or 74 – most of us have a limiting belief that it is too late to change our trajectory.  We believe they are too old.  Instead of saying “I’m too old to change careers”, Laurel instructs us to replace that belief with the saying – “I am open to the possibilities of a new career.”  

Doing the inner-work will not only help you in your outter-work.  It will help you in every aspect of your life.

The Price of Integrity

Today’s Scripture: Job 6-9

The majority of this passage is consumed with Job’s continued pleas, both with his friends and with God.  In regard to his friends, he compares them to the Wadis of Palestine, bodies of water that dry up in the summer, just when water is needed most.  While he is in need of comfort because of the tragedies that have befallen him, his friends instead come to his side and accuse him of sin.  It is a difficult concept to grasp from our worldview, but imagine having  a close friend or relative die (only one of the many things that has happened to Job at this point), and having everyone around you say, “You must have done something to deserve this.”  Job is adamant that he has not — and so the conflict arises.

It is important to point out Job’s diligence in making sacrifices to God, which was stressed in yesterday’s passage.  It’s not that Job thinks he is perfect and incapable of sin.  He is well aware of his propensity to sin, and even if he doesn’t know if he has sinned or if his family members have sinned, he routinely makes sacrifices to atone for sin just in case.  Job is not just being prideful toward his friends when he argues their viewpoint.  In 6:24-25 he tells them, “Teach me, and I will be quiet; show me where I have been wrong.  How painful are honest words!  But what do your arguments prove?”  He would be willing to listen to their harsh words if they were true, but given their false nature, Job’s integrity won’t allow it. 

When Job’s friend Bildad makes his first speech, we see some insight into the reasons for their mindset.  He says in 8:20, “Surely God does not reject a blameless man or strengthen the hands of evildoers.”  The problem here is that the retribution principle assigns human logic to God.  Aside from the fact that it is not God who is doing this to Job (as we see from the introduction and his conversation with Satan), to assume that God will work in the world according to what we think is right is to err greatly.  God, all-knowing, all-powerful, knows what is best for us far better than we do.

It is Job’s reply to Bildad that bears more truth than perhaps even Job intended.  First, he questions, “If it is not he, then who is it?”  In other words, if it is not God who causes calamity and destruction in the lives of the righteous, who is it?  Again, as readers we have a different view than the characters, so in this instance we can say undoubtedly that it is Satan.  However, let’s apply that to our own situations.  When the innocent are killed by the hand of man, can we not say that it is the work of Satan to tempt people to sin in that way?  When wickedness fills the earth, can we not pinpoint the source to be the evil one who has dominion over the earth?  We have already seen his crafty ways in Genesis 3, when he used lies and deceit to lure Eve and then Adam into disobeying God in the Garden of Eden.  We cannot be naive enough to think he will not do the same to us.

Job’s words at the end of chapter 9 offer a ray of hope, whether intentionally or not.  He pleas for an advocate in 9:33-34, “If only there were someone to arbitrate between us, to lay his hand upon us both, someone to remove God’s rod from me, so that his terror would frighten me no more.”  Though this allusion was perhaps unintended by the author, this seems to be a foreshadowing of Christ.  Knowing how Satan has defiled His creation, God has a plan of redemption in store for mankind, waiting at the cross for the sins of the world to rest on He who can take them away.  Now, that doesn’t imply that tragedy won’t continue to happen.  Though redemption is offered, Satan still has dominion over the earth until the time of Christ’s return, which we’ll see in the Revelation of John.  What it does mean, though, is that sin no longer binds us — that sacrifice is no longer required in atonement for sin (because the perfect sacrifice has already been made for us), and that there is no longer any excuse for the retribution principle.  What Job is pleading for here is just that — justification of his integrity.  Though he seems to be found guilty with no charge, he is asking for someone to plead with God on his behalf, so that his integrity may be spared.

Seein' what sticks

I’m a big Stephen Colbert fan and on the Colbert Report he often will announce a new “series” such as “Better Know a District” or “Tip of the Hat, Wag of My Finger” or “See You in Health.”  Some work, some don’t, some disappear and some come back from time to time.  What I like is the fearless approach to trying anything to see what works.

With that in mind, I’m announcing the start of my multi-week series:  “Seein’ What Sticks.”  I’m going to throw things on the wall on Fridays to see what sticks, because it’s my blog and I can.

Job

JOB

Job 1:21  “The Lord gave and the Lord has taken away, may the name of the Lord be praised”.

This one verse tells us about the most blameless upright man that ever lived.  A man who lost all, yet gained all, because he won the favour of God.  This man lost all yet he did not blaspheme God in self righteousness;  he praised God.  In other words, he was victorious though he lost his worldly possessions.  He was victorious spiritually.  For me, 1:21 is the key verse because he first of all realized all that he had belonged, not to him, but to God.  Secondly, when he lost all his materialistic and worldly possessions, Job praised God.  It must have been extremely difficult to say and do;  yet Job placed God on a much higher pedestal than his materialism and family.  This key verse gives us insight as modern day believers on how we, as Christians, should react in difficult circumstances.  I recently read the book by Terry Law in which he related the death of his first wife, Jan.  The most painful, yet the most illuminating process, was getting up early and praising God shortly after the death of his wife when he was left with three children.  But Terry Low tapped into the reservoir of God’s love, healing, comfort and deliverance.  The simple key was praise and worship.  Praise God, through thick and thin;  praise God, through wind or storm.  Learn to praise and watch Him lead you through the difficult situation or process in your life.

Authorship: The authorship of Job is uncertain and under an immense amount of speculation.  According to Nelson’s Complete Book of Bible Maps and Charts, p. 171 “the contents of the book indicate that its author was a profound thinker who treats some of the most crucial and difficult problems of human existence from a mature spiritual perspective.  According to Jack W. Hayford, p. 130, “perhaps even Solomon himself”.  According to the book, Old Testament Survey, p. 562, “the author of Job hides nameless in the background of his work while demonstrating overwhelming sensitivity to the human plight, capacity for massive theological understanding, group of vast areas of culture and learning, insight into deep struggles among opiniated persons and skill in literary craftsmanship”.

Date: According to Nelson’s Complete Book of Bible Maps and Charts, p. 171, “suggestions for the date of the book’s composition range from the patriarchal era to the post exilic period.  Most scholars today date the book between the Solomonic and exilic eras.  According to Hayford’s Bible Handbook, “the manners, customs and general lifestyle of Job are from the patriarchal period (about 2000-1800 BC).

Structure: According to the Old Testament Survey by William Sanford, David Allen and Frederic William, p. 564, the structure can be divided into;

Comparison between Job and Jesus: Was Job a shadow of what was to come?  Was Job a type of Christ?  W. F. Albright has interpreted the name Job as “where is (my) father?”  (taken from Old Testament Survey, p. 560)

Job: Job was a blameless and upright man.  He feared God and shunned evil (Job 1:1, Job 1:8).  There is noone on earth like him.  Job 1:21 “The Lord gave and the Lord has taken away, may the name of the Lord be praised”.  Job 1:12 “Very well then everything he has is in your hands but on the man himself do not lay a finger”.  Job was the most blameless and upright man on earth.  Job 1:12 tells us that God allowed the devil to bring trials and tests into his life.  Job did not deserve it;  yet he went through physical pain (2:7), emotional pain (1:200 and psychological pain (3:1).  Job, through no fault of his own, was allowed by God to be severely tested by Satan, yet Job did not retaliate;  he did not curse God (2:9,10).  He went through his pain;  he went through his suffering.  Job didn’t deserve it, yet it came upon him.  Why?  Because I believe there is a reason behind it.  Nothing that is in the Bible has happened by chance.  The story of Job for me has a deep prophetic connotation.  Job 42:10-16, 42:12  The Lord blessed the latter part of Job’s life more than the first.  At least it has a happy ending!!

Jesus Christ: Matthew 27:23  What crime has he committed, asked Pilate, but they shouted all the louder, crucify Him.  Matt. 27:30  They spit on him and took the staff and struck him on the head again and again.  Key verse:  Matt. 27:46  Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani, which means My God, my God, why have you forsaken me.

Jesus was innocent, yet God allowed Jesus to endure immense pain, pressure of our sins, physical and psychological anguish for no fault of his own.  Just because of his love for us.  When Job, the most blameless, upright man that lived in his time, went through that suffering, did God just see Job .. or did God see Jesus in Job, knowing that one day his only son would go through suffering far worse, through no fault of his own.

Job, the meaning of his name is where is (my) father.  Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani.  I would like to conclude this comparison with a rhetorical question – Was the suffering and name of Job symbolic to what took place on Calvary?  But what took place on Calvary carried immense magnitude – the enormity of the deity dying for us on Calvary.

Application: This book tells us that God allows tests and trials in a person’s life.  This transaction stage or process stage, as I heard in a seminar, is called “liminality”.  Job went through a liminality stage in his life in which he endured excruciating pain.  But in the end, he came out victorious and the latter part of Job’s life was blessed even more than the former.  I believe Job is an example of a victorious liminality survivor.

We, as Christians, are in the liminality process, just as Job was in the process.  We are waiting for the second coming of Christ.  We are in the sanctification process awaiting the time we will be fully glorified in Christ.

Main themes: According to the Nelson’s Complete Book of Bible Maps and Charts, “the basic question of the book is ‘why do the righteous suffer if God is loving and all powerful?’’  The second theme for me is God’s hand on Job’s life during his suffering and God blessing Job because Job stood strong in his faith in God.

Theological Truths: God is in control.  God who is omniscient or all knowing knows about everything, whether it is good or evil, and He is in control.  God has a higher plan, a higher purpose in mind.  The devil needed God’s permission to attack Job, yet God preserved his life and blessed him more as he came out of his suffering, completely victorious.  Isa 48:10 “see I have refined you, though not as silver, I have tested you in the furnace of affliction”.  God refines and tests us.  We, as His children, go through difficult situations in our life many times, but God never leaves us nor forsakes us.  God never tempts us but I believe God allows us to go through hard times in our life so that we come out stronger, ready for His divine call.

Distinctive Pentecostal Beliefs: A distinctive Pentecostal belief here is spiritual warfare.  Satan brought about oppression in Job’s life yet Job stood firm.  In Job 1:10, it tells us that God put a hedge of protection around Job.  In Eph. 6:10-20, the armour of God is our protection.  When we, as children of the most high, live to please God, the devil brings about opposition.  The devil brings about all kinds of oppression.  The devil can attack our mind, our emotions, our finances, our family;  but, what I learnt from Job is that the devil cannot take the life of a child of God unless God allows it to happen.  The devil has come to steal, to kill and to destroy, but God has come to give us life and give it in abundance.  Spiritual warfare is real.  I have experienced it in my life but our God is far greater, far mightier.  Jesus is our deliverer and redeemer.

Another distinctive Pentecostal belief is the prosperity of Job and the latter part of Job’s prosperity was greater than the former (Job 42:42).  Contrary to a pentecostal belief that I have read here in Job is suffering.  Many of our charismatic and Pentecostal churches are so caught up in the prosperity and spiritual warfare teaching that they fail to train and help people going through suffering.  Many charismatic churches talk about the bed or roses, but those roses have thorns.  So I would urge the Pentecostal churches to talk about trials and tribulations or the so called “laminality” process that every person endures during some time of their life.

Application: This book of Job has immensely helped me in my life.  I went through a difficult time in my life.  In fact, I suffered from depression but this book has given me a hope for the future.  I would like to close with a poem I wrote:

Who am I?

That thought in my heart I ponder

What am I meant to be

Oh God, the future I just can’t foresee

Yet you care for me.

You didn’t just let me be,

You have a place and purpose

Thy Word is the key.

I came into the world a little seed,

Curious about the world so mysterious,

Bombarded with emotions hilarious,

At times delirious, at other times, furious

As I started to grow and mature to the tree I was meant to be,

I faced the storms of life

Into temptations I was tossed,

Yet through thy divine grace at Calvary

To temptation I was no longer held in slavery,

You set me free, enabling me to grow in sanctity,

Your word says, You shall bear fruit in season,

Seasons have come, seasons are gone,

Oh God, I feel so alone, why was I ever born,

Yet you on me never did frown,

The veil to enter the holy of holies was torn

By thy divine blood on the cross which was no loss,

At thy feet I place my supplication,

Oh Christ, on me make a divine transformation,

This season, let me see my life has a reason

Let me bear fruit at a dozen

Change my heart, my attitude

As I grow and mature in thy attitude,

As I pray I feel thy presence come as a ray

2010 Goals (as of Feb 2010)

I have decided to create my very own grading scale. It only consists of two things, either a WOO-HOO for a success or a WOMP for a failure. Even more crazy is that I actually use both of those words in my real-life. Without further ado, here are the updates on my 2010 annual goals.

    Financial:

– Increase my monthly contribution to my Roth to $300
So, I cancelled my automatic contributions. With my new budget in place, I plan on contributing about $400 a month. So I think that is a WOO-HOO

– Start a 401K
WOO-HOO! I did start one. However, I’m not too happy with Vanguard sending me mail every 5 minutes! I’m not green by any measure, but I really do hate paper mail. I am a hoarder by nature and companies that send me mail are enablers.

– Double my Net Worth (so I’m shooting for $33,766)
I guess I won’t be able to comment on this until the end of the year, but I did pretty well last month. If I am to hit that goal, I will need to win the lotto increase my networth by $1,495 every month. Is it me or does this number get larger and larger? For now, let’s just wait and see.

– Budget
WOO-HOO. So this is working for me. I do have one in place. Totally went over it last month though.

– Cancel 2 credit cards
For now, a WOMP. Almost had the chance to complete half of this goal, but I passed. I know which credit cards I’m going to cancel (JCPenneys, Citi, and Bloomingdales), I just need to have $0 debt before I start making the calls. I definitely see this being completed by the end of the year.

– Take another bill from parents
Crickets. WOMP

– Move my savings to another bank
I’ve been scouting out some banks but my APY seems pretty competitive in this environment. I did hear of an online bank offering 2% on deposits, so if they cut my rate below 1.5% then that’s where I’m headed. For now, a WOMP!

    Blog

– Participate in 12 blog carnivals
Yeah…didn’t participate in ANY blog carnivals again. But I have plenty of time to redeem myself. And I will. For now, enjoy this WOMP.

– Write at least 3 posts a week
This has been going pretty well. I think last week I did only 2 posts, but that was just one week. In the overall scheme of things I’ve been meeting my goal, so WOO-HOO!

– Change the theme (grey, blue and orange are so 2009…)
So this is going to happen this month. My bloggiversary is coming up in 25 days guys!!! I’ve been checking out some themes (the free ones at least) and I’m not a fan, but we’ll see what I end up going with. I think this is classified as a WOMP-HOO.

– Buy a domain name
So my good friend Two Young totally hooked me up with a nice deal to get my domain name for a $1. Except laziness trumps all, so I haven’t moved to it. It’s coming peeps. Just wait for it. WOMP.

– Do a monthly update of my net worth
WOO-HOOs all around. Now that I’m a tracker, why wouldn’t I do a monthly update?

– Get more readers
I love seeing every faces, but old and new. I just want people to come to my blog and to leave with a smile! WOO-HOO!

    Personal

– Work out 3 times a week
WOMP WOMP WOMPERS. This is horrible. However, March is going to bring about a change. Primarily because going to Costa Rica is becoming a bit more of a reality. So I’ve stocked up on Groupons for gym memberships that should carry me to mid-may. I’ve also found out that my Health Insurance offers discounts on gym memberships, so I’ll be signing up for Ballys for only $1/day

– Make one meal a month
I made this delicious PB&J one time. Totally had to be there. Alright, WOMP.

– Study my cheeks off for the GMAT
Studying about 2.5 hours a day. Classes start on Saturday. A very bittersweet WOO-HOO, since I can’t say studying is enjoyable.

– Apply/Get into to B-School
I haven’t really looked at my essays since this last update. But since I’ve started the application, I’m clearly on track, right? RIGHT? I’m going to sneak a WOO-HOO for this month. However, if I haven’t made any further progress on essays in March, I’m turning it into a WOMP

– Get a raise/promotion
I’m working harder. I’m actually enjoying my work. So, getting a raise and/or promotion would be chocolate icing on top of a very chocolately cake. (I really don’t like whip cream or Maraschino cherries…) I’m not sure how much control I have over this, but everyone cross your fingers for this WOMP to become a WOO-HOO!

– Team Lead 2 Community Service projects and Volunteer at least once a month
As I mentioned in the last update, I probably won’t be volunteering in any projects until after I’m done applying. So this is on hold. Not a WOMP, but not quite a WOO-HOO, either.

– Network (the dreaded cold call or mixer. I will challenge myself to at least one per month)
Last month I went to a fundraiser with the my Money Buddy. I also went to my last networking event with her. She’s pretty much my crutch for this things. I think I’m going to put the networking on a hold for now, but hey if someone is having a mixer, I’m not going to say no. WOO-HOO!

– Add $5 to each of my donations
I’m not going to link back to my expense report so you will all forget about how much of a scrooge I was this past month. I’ll do better. I promise! WOMP

– Read one book a month
I’ve read Kaplan’s GMAT 2010 Premier Study Guide cover to cover. But if that doesn’t count, I did start reading Manisha Thakoor’s, “Getting Financially Naked: How to Talk Money with Your Honey.” I’m up to part II where the talking with your honey is discussed. Maybe I’ll finish it in March, but we’ll see. For now, a WOMP-HOO!

– Travel with BF
The plan is place, the workout has begun. Before we book, we’re waiting to hear back about BF’s start date for his position. Once we know, we’ll plan based on that! So, I’m considering it a WOO-HOO!

So as the months go on, and as actually do some of these things, I probably will delete them from the list. Then, at the end of December, I’ll do a giant re-cap of the goals and whether or not I accomplished them!

Mistakes that Could Ruin Your Interview

There’s no doubt that going on a job interview is a critical portion of a job candidate’s application process. If you were lucky enough to have a resume that got you through the door, the interview will provide you with an opportunity to further prove that you’re right for the position.

However, it’s not uncommon for a job candidate to get to the job interview then arrive and “fumble the ball.” The worst thing you can do in an interview is make little mistakes that destroy your chances of getting a position. So before going on your next interview, take a look at these mistakes that could definitely ruin it.

Don’t Arrive Late (or Too Early)

One fatal error that could hurt your chances of acquiring the position you desire is to arrive to the job interview late. Hiring managers are very busy people, and they often schedule several interviews within the same hour. If you show up late, you give an indication of what the employer could expect from you as an employee – not a good thing.

However, it’s also good to keep in mind that arriving too early could work against you too. While arriving 15 minutes prior to the interview is perfectly acceptable, arriving 30 minutes early could also through off the interviewer’s schedule and is generally frowned upon.

Don’t Trash a Previous Employer

If you had a bad experience with a previous employer, don’t tell the prospective employer about it. For instance, never talk about how you disagreed with your last boss at every turn, and instead, simply say that you’d left because your goals didn’t line up with the missions of the company. But to say that the manager “sucks” will likely leave a bad taste in the interviewers mouth.

Don’t Get Too “Familiar”

Some hiring managers have complained that job applicants often get too familiar or friendly with them during an interview. Don’t bring up personal relationships, or you’ll alienate your potential new boss and ruin your chances at a call back.

Don’t Dress Inappropriately (or Sloppy)

We all know that wearing a t-shirt or provocative attire is unacceptable during an interview, but many employers also frown upon attire that looks cheap, or even you not ironing your suit or having scuffs in your shoes. Remember that there’s no better time for dressing well and looking impeccable than a job interview.

Don’t Question Pay and Benefits Too Soon

You may be anxious to know whether the position you’re interested in will pay will or offer health insurance benefits, but the time to ask is not when you walk through the door for the interview. If during the interview, you’re offered the position then it’s good to be prepared to negotiate. Hold your tongue until that point, though, if you don’t want to appear to have a sense of entitlement.

If you think in terms of what you should and should not do in an interview, you can strengthen your chances of getting the position you want. Besides, what’s the point in working so hard on a resume if you’re just going to sabotage the efforts in your interview?

Leaning On Christ My Savior

So, Wednesday, February 24th was a wonderful example of God’s sovereignty. I was part of a reduction in force at my employer. Shocked, stunned to say the least. Day 2 set in a little more, but this morning is when the feelings of disappointment set in. Luckily, I was at my Friday morning men’s group.

Something I have tried to maintain throughout the last coupleof days is faithfulness in God. I can honestly say I have a real peace about all this.

Philippians 4:7

“And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”

This is so true. I could be bitter. I could dwell on things. I could be depressed. All these feelings, though, won’t help me get a new job. Even more, they won’t help me be a light in the darkness as I’m called to be as a child of God.

Don’t get me wrong; this is not easy. Every fleshly part of my body is crying out to be heard. But I have chosen to follow Jesus. That choice, the only real choice I have, is what is saving me, from, well…me.

I am praising God that He knows His plans.

Jeremiah 29:11

“For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope.”

Just today was an amazing blessing. My contacts are now medically necessary. This may not seem awe-inspiring or may seem more like a curse rather than blessing. Because of being necessary, my $516 contact lenses are only $30! Obviously, money is tight now, and the Lord has provided.

I am still praying. I still believe. I am still leaning on Him. I can say I am eagerly waiting for God; and for whatever He has in store for me.

I'm Not Dead, But Not Quite Alive Either

Ever since Britney came out with “I’m Not a Girl,” I’ve always found ways to describe my situation as being ‘not one, but not quite the other.” I mean, Britney totally rocked the post-pubescent-pre-adulthood thing.

Until she shaved her head off and became a man.

But for now, I’m in between the living and the dead. Of course the first culprit is work. Why can’t one ever be content with sitting in the corner and successfully hiding away from their superiors? Not me. I like to see what’s going on. Except, I never expect that something is actually going on. Silly me. They get me EVERYTIME. All half-quips aside, I’m actually really excited about my job right now. There are some interesting projects swirling around and I’m having a hand in sme of them. My on-the-job experience scale has just exploded off the Richter and I love it! I never imagined my role taking on this form, but then again, no one expected the economy to tank. Well, no one except Nouriel Roubini aka Doctor Doom.

I could also say that my Money Moves is an accessory in this whole affair. Opening a 401K seems easy as peach pie. (Is peach pie easy? Not sure…) Switching your Roth IRA from the clutches of your Financial Advisor to another holding company? About as easy as NASTY PEACH PIE. I won’t paint a picture of my FA as a scorned lover, using all of his powers to prevent the impending departure of his “other half.” No that’s not it as all. In better words, it isn’t him, but it isn’t me either.

It’s actually my conscience.

I feel really bad breaking up with my FA. Ok, no I don’t. I feel really bad about switching my miniscule assets to another fund and NOT telling my FA about it. For some reason, it scares the bejesus out of me to tell him that I’ve decided to go to another fund. So, I’m doing what any mature person would do in this situation: I’m not saying a word and dipping out the back door. Yup, like a deadbeat I’m walking away.

Am I legally contracted to tell him that I don’t want him robbing me blind anymore? our financial relationship is over? Or is this an ethical dilemna? Is it morally wrong to just leave without saying a word? If he could understand that I’m Not Dead/Not Quite Alive/all I need is time..

Aside from that, I’ve just been lazy, choosing to bum around on the couch when I get home and spending an extra 30 minutes in bed in the morning. So yeah, that’s why I’ve been gone. To all that are under the wrath of Snowpocalypse: I feel you. Stay warm all!

Do crazy reality TV bosses fascinate you? Find out why...

Has your boss ever served a customer with a smile and turned right around a yelled at you for moving too slow? Or maybe you’ve been verbally abused or even fired for making a simple mistake. If so, you probably had what Aubrey Daniels calls a sociopathic boss.

Just today, I was talking with two colleagues about an incident where our boss told the co-worker, “If I had a choice, I would have never hired you.”  And if that wasn’t enough, when he saw the tears running down her face he barked, “Why are you crying?!” My eyes would have gotten a little misty too if he yelled that to me. 

Let’s face it – these type of comments cut like a knife when your head is on the chopping block. But we can’t seem to get enough of reality shows like ”Hell’s Kitchen” and “Kell on Earth” where crazy bosses yell obscenities and fire people left and right. Daniels gives good reasons in his article “Our Fascination with Sociopathic Bosses. “

Among the reasons, he mentions “vicarious empowerment”. Literally, an after-the-fact expression of your sentiments…”I wouldn’t let him to that to me” or “You know you shouldn’t take that abuse”. Most people would never confront a boss in person, but will resort to indirect means. In the age of reality TV, the easiest way is to turn on a show like “Ugly Betty” and root that someone lets Wilhemina Slater have it.

Aubrey Daniels makes a good case. Along with his three reasons for why America is fascinated with sociopathic bosses, he also explains the effect they have on long-term organizational success. And I can sum it up it two words. Not much. Read “Our Fascination with Sociopathic Bosses” for the entire article and find out why America is intrigued by crazy bosses.

“I used to think the book of Job is in the Bible because it presents a rare and extreme case of human suffering.  “Look at this worst case scenario.  If you can see the truth here, then surely in your comparatively small problems . . . .”

Now I think the book of Job is in the Bible because the story is so common.  Many are thinking, “What on earth has happened to me?  I can’t see what I’ve done that explains this devastation.  Where is God in this?”

Enter Job’s three friends.  They were cautious at first.  But with their tidy notions threatened by his untidy realities, the moralism started pouring out of them: “Come on, Job, get real with us.  You must have some dirty secret that explains all this.  Admit it, and this misery will start going away.”  Their finger-pointing oversimplifications intensified Job’s sufferings, and this too is a common experience.

I don’t think the book of Job is about suffering as a theoretical problem — why do the righteous suffer?  I think it’s about suffering as a practical problem — when (not if) the righteous suffer, what does God expect of them?  And what he expects is trust.  When the righteous cannot connect the realities of their experience with the truths of God, then God is calling them to trust him that there is more to it than they can see.  As with Job, there is a battle being fought in the heavenlies.

Trust in God, not explanations from God, is the pathway through suffering.”

Relaunch of noventum.de Website

Just today we published our new noventum website. It looks just great in my opnion. I delayed updating the contents for the IT service management pages until the new site was available, so the old site was a bit outdated.

Don't Forget To Celebrate Healthy Lifestyle Awareness Day

Office life can be the pits, especially when you are chained to a desk for up to 12-hours a day. Our bodies were made to be mobile and upright, so no wonder our country is facing an epidemic of obesity. In order to celebrate Healthy Lifestyle Awareness Day, we’re rolling out some quick tips to avoid workout excuses and start getting fit.

  • 1. Take The Stairs – You’ll appreciate doing this when you see the results on your trim waistline and when the elevator finally gets stuck and you’re not in it.
  • 2. Park In The Spot Furthest From Your Building – Sometimes, adding a few extra steps can show all the difference, especially when you sit sedentary at a desk. Parking further away means you’ll be moving more, but do it at a quicker pace to elevate your heart rate!
  • 3. Lunges In The Conference Room – Do lunges around the giant table in the conference room. If you do this three times in a day you will really feel the burn in your hips and thighs, which will help you slim down.
  • 4. Seated Leg Lifts – While sitting at your desk, extend one leg out and hold it parallel to the ground. Hold it there for 60-seconds. Switch legs and do it again. Do this in reps of 15 twice a day and your legs will be beach ready in no time.
  • 5. Arm Stetches – Put both arms in the air and stretch for 30-seconds. Then stretch, one arm at a time, a little higher than the other. Do this for reps of ten three times a day to give your shoulders and upper back a nice workout.
  • 6. One Legged Telephone Squats – While stuck on conference calls, stand up and do one legged squats. Make sure you hold onto your chair or desk for support and squat away. By the end of your call you’ll have had quite the workout!
  • 7. 60-Second Cardio - For 60-seconds commit to a heavy physical endurance in the form of running in place, jumping jacks, or even jumping rope if you have the room. Doing this a few times a day will keep your body and mind fresh!

In the Limelight: Loving Young House Love's Dream Job as a Blogger

I’m starting a new feature on 2inspired. One that highlights successful individuals with unbelievable awe-inspiring careers. A spin-off of my “Successful Dreamers” feature, it’ll talk a bit more about the actual job. I’m going to start this week’s feature with my favorite blogging duo John & Sherry Petersik, soon-to-be parents and immensely talented creators of home improvement DIY site Young House Love.

I’ve spoken to them before (you can read my past post here) and so was extremely grateful that they were able to take time away from their busy schedule to chat with me again. Thanks again Sherry for all of your help! Hope you guys enjoy it!

Blogging as a Career

Dream of working at home in your pajamas one day while writing about topics you’re passionate about? Then working as a professional blogger may be your dream come true.

Anyone can be a blogger, but the difference between blogging as a career and doing it as a hobby is whether you get paid.  In the past, people who blogged did so for fun and used it as an online journal to share photos and updates to their friends and family.  Today, however there are bloggers who write about everything from weddings to home décor and make a good living doing it full-time.  With patience, hard work, and great writing and marketing skills, you could be the next Julie Powell of Julie and Julia.

Blogging wasn’t around when Sherry of Young House Love was a kid.  Instead what she fancied was design.  She dreamed of growing up to be a fine artist one day.  And though Sherry didn’t set out to blog full-time, her passion for writing and creativity helped give her the skills she would need to eventually become a full-time professional blogger.

“The funny thing is that although I’m a blogger, many aspects of my job are still creative and visual since I focus on home improvement and interior design. I love that I get to work with color, proportion and design on a daily basis- even if I’m not whipping out oil-paints and canvases.”

In high school, Sherry took English classes for extra credit and in college she studied advertising design eventually graduating with a Bachelor in Fine Arts. Her goal was to be a copywriter, writing ads for magazines and television commercials.  It was there that she got good at grammar and writing creatively and persuasively-things that would help her significantly as a blogger.

Sherry got a job after college as an advertising copywriter in New York.  At the time, her and her husband John both worked full-time and blogged part-time as a hobby.

After several posts on their kitchen remodel to friends and family, their blog gained popularity.  Soon they were being mentioned on websites, magazines and newspapers.  John and Sherry realized the potential to transform their hobby into a full-time gig.

After four years of working full-time, Sherry decided to leave her job so that she could devote her energy and focus to the blog.  Since then, their blog has received 30,000 visitors!

Sherry says she was surprised by all the attention their blog has gotten and never imagined that she would be able to do this as a full-time job.

One of the perks has been the letters and emails she receives from those who love their work and are from all over the world including India and Africa. She also loves the flexibility that comes from being your own boss.  At the same time, it is hard work!

Today is HAPPO - NYC PR Pro Ready for Action!

I’m selling myself for Help a PR Pro Out Day (HAPPO), taking place on Friday, February 19. Everything else I have done to find a job hasn’t worked so maybe this will help me and all my creative PR friends find jobs again and we’ll live happily ever after.

Most recently, I worked with the American Red Cross of Northern New Jersey as the Director of Communications.  I experienced things in this role that I never thought imaginable. I traveled to disaster ravaged areas in a public affairs role, meeting with local and national media to deliver the message of the Red Cross. I was humbled by families who were impacted by disaster and built bonds with colleagues from across the nation.  I was N.J.’s lead spokesperson during two of the most notable aviation disasters in the northeast: US Airways flight 1549 on the Hudson River and Continental Airlines flight 3407 in Buffalo. I watched miracles and heartbreak occur within a month of one another.  And then they eliminated my department.

Whether I was on the ground or behind a desk, it was my job to make sure the mission of the organization was relayed to the public. I built a department from nothing. It was a challenge but something I am so proud of.  I did everything PR related.  Press releases, media interviews, collateral materials, editorial web content, fundraising and crisis communications, strategic planning, managing umbrella chapters’ communications; should I keep going?

Prior to joining a non-profit, which was a life-long dream, I worked with agencies in New City handling the day-to-day duties of public relations.

In addition to my work in non-profit and media/entertainment, my industry experience spans corporate, beauty, fashion and consumer. I am also a contributing writer with a local newspaper in Essex County, New Jersey and a writer for Examiner.com

What I love about PR is bringing groundbreaking news or technology into the lives of everyday people. I like seeing an idea that seems lifeless suddenly grow leaps and bounds, all because of careful execution, determination and skill. I miss that. I miss being a part of that. Help bring me back there!

Movie

I was excited to see Percy Jackson and we finally went last night!

However, it was disappointing. I know I usually have something positive to say about book-movies, I go in with the expectation that it won’t be the same. There are cuts for time and it is really a screen adaptation, not complete book. But this movie was so different from the book it was distracting. They left out major characters, they captured almost none of the beautiful imagery in the book, and overall just completely told a different story. If this is the only movie, I can go with it. But if they try to do the whole series (which why would they not being money hungry movie freaks) I do not understand how it will work. I wonder what Rick thinks… :-(

I am almost finished with a new exciting book. Caught up in my class finally. And soon will be out of a job! A sucky, stressful job, so woohoo!

Skills changed and skills found

Hello, as most of you know in the past few weeks i’ve been trying to gather info on dualer job. I found some stats for the skills and stuff and some more info. Dualer’s skill are here! As i said before they use a new type of weapons called blades!        Those are the blades. i assume the first from top is the lvl 10 one and the first from bottom is lvl 20 one. The purple one is probably timeless/reverse one and the reddish-white-ish one is probably maple blade. These new weapons look pretty sick, man. Gonna make one when it comes out. As you can see in the header i wrote a message thing saying that dualers are coming out feb. 25. Also there is 2x exp all week!  Calender on the site saying when: As you can see on the saturadays: 6,13, and 20th there is 2x exp from 1:00 to 6:00 and for most of this week there is 2x exp at 11:00 AM to 4:00 PM. I only was able to get some 4th job and some 5th job skills :( .   So for the first few lvls its a normal rogue life then at lvl 30 u can advance to dualer. the 4th job skills i found(NOTE: their 4th job is at lvl 55 i think) :
